Arend Kahlau considers himself an optimistic and innovative individual with strong leadership skills which he uses to try and make South Africa a better place.
The 23-year-old Honour's student from the University of Pretoria has been part of multiple community engagement initiatives and various outreaches with the purpose to serve those around him. In 2019 he started the Unite Mzansi campaign to bring about social change by encouraging people to start looking at South Africa with an optimistic mindset again.
He created Instagram and Facebook pages to communicate his message and recorded a video where he explained his vision. Many young South Africans responded by sending him their own videos about their favourite part of South Africa which he added to the video. It received 150+ shares on Facebook, and reached 20 000+ people.
Arend was president of his high school in 2014, served on the Junior City Council of Tshwane from 2012 to 2014 and was selected as one of the top 100 students of South Africa via GradStar in 2017.
